Betsy's Blog | Consulate General of the Philippines

Seals.jpg

Yesterday, Alex and I took a road trip to Chicago, not for our anniversary, but to prepare for next year in Asia Pacific; we needed to have both of our birth certificates and our marriage certificate authenticated (see the official ribbons and seals attached to the documents in the picture). The fact that we were at the Consulate raised the question of why. When Filipinos first hear that we're going to Manila for a year and see that we're both caucasian Americans, they are often confused and warn us of what to watch out for: traffic, heat, humidity, rain, flooding, and robbers. Yesterday we experienced a small taste of the limited personal space, blunt and direct questions, and save-face attitude that we'll likely see much more of in Asia next year.

It was a joy, however, to be surrounded by and to interact with the people we will be serving alongside next year. I met a mom who had an adorable five month old baby girl (who was probably this size I was at birth). Alex met a man in line who admired his baseball hat featuring the national team of the Philippines and who taught him to say "you're beautiful" to me in Tagalog.

Our hearts beat faster as we anticipate our transition in July. We know that we can't even imagine the blessings, joys, and struggles we will face next year, but we want to take a moment again to say thank you for supporting us in our dream!

As missionary associates who are support raising to spend a year serving in Asia Pacific, it’s easy to feel exempt from giving. To be humbled by those who are so generous with us and to feel like right now we’re on the receiving end. This site reminds me that giving isn’t just money. It’s sacrificing time, abilities, and funds to say that you believe in someone. To make another person’s day better. We have been spending less and giving more. We like giving. http://ilikegiving.com/

Betsy's Blog | Breakaway 2013

Breakaway.jpg

Breakaway 2013 (Yes, it was in the middle of February. I'm behind in blogging!) was the best one Alex or I have been a part of. That's saying a lot, since it was his tenth consecutive year and my ninth! For those who don't know, Breakaway is Calvary Church's winter retreat for middle school students. Alex has been responsible for making a highlight video of each day; students love seeing their faces on the big screen! For the first seven years, I had a cabin of small group girls; the past two years since I haven't had a small group, I've been an assistant activities director and have taught a workshop. We love the fact that Breakaway takes students away from their normal routine for three days, separating them from their  circumstances at home and school. As a result, their hearts are tender and expectant. This year, there were tweaks made to the schedule which allowed over 300 students more time to process and apply moving messages from Brian Porzio, this year's returning speaker. After the weekend, students returned to their homes and schools with a fresh filling of the Spirit. We were blessed to see God move in powerful ways in both students' and leaders' lives and to reconnect with many dear friends. Even though both of Alex's computers died the second night so that he couldn't make a highlight video on campus, he loves the day two highlight more than any he's made in previous years. Watch it below to find out why!

Betsy's Blog | Forgotten God

ForgottenGodChan.jpg

Forgotten God by Francis Chan is an easy read, but a lot to digest. As I read, I'm challenged not to stifle the Holy Spirit, but to listen and obey throughout the large and small moments of my day. I'm challenged to have faith and to examine the motivation behind my asking in faith. I'm challenged to read Scripture and ask for His help understanding, meditating on, and applying it instead of trying to fit Scripture into what I've been taught. I'm thankful that He already dwells within me and pray that I will practice being present with Him.

Holy Spirit, thank you for living in me. Thank you for daily helping me put sin to death and submit to my Creator. As I teach, talk with students, and engage with others around me, work through me. I have nothing to offer but willingness to follow your direction. I desire to know you and to help others know you.

Betsy + Alex | The World Missions Summit 3

At The World Missions Summit 3 in Forth Worth, TX, Alex and I were in the missionary role! We connected with college students through

  • answering their questions about Asia Pacific/Philippines.
  • taking their picture against three Asia Pacific backgrounds.
  • describing to them our calling and what we’ll be doing overseas.
  • asking how God was moving in their hearts.
  • praying with them.

It was exciting to see God call so many students to missions. It was humbling to be surrounded by missionary heroes, asking them where they serve, what they do, how God brought them there, and lots of other questions. It was a joy to worship God with nearly 5,000 others who are missions-minded.

Our Asia Pacific missionary family!

The biggest takeaway for both Alex and I was Dick Brogden’s challenge to surrender the idea that I can do it in my own strength and to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit. Both of us have been in our profession and ministry areas for ten years. It’s easy to slip into the “I got this; I’ve been around the block a few times” way of thinking. We hope that this year, we will be a couple of prayer like never before and that we’ll desperately rely on the Holy Spirit for boldness, power, guidance, and discernment.

Prayer Update | Shifting Gears

stick-1.jpg

As you may know, we are currently praying that God would provide us with a renter for our condo. We have a solid candidate, but nothing confirmed yet. Now our prayers have shifted to another need: transportation Due to a generous offer from our missionary supervisors in Manila, we have a car to drive! That being said, Betsy has never driven a manual transmission before and needs to learn to drive stick in Chicagoland so she can be prepared for the crazy traffic of Manila. We are currently praying that someone would lend us a car a couple times before we leave the country to help Betsy learn to drive stick! So if you are interested in letting Betsy and me use a manual transmission for an hour here or there in order for Betsy to learn to drive stick, please contact us! Blessings!

Betsy + Alex | Oh..oh..oh...it's Thanksgiving...

Well we are here in Tennessee celebrating our last Thanksgiving in the states before we live overseas next year. It is great to see the whole Regenfi family! I love them so much! In the first month and a half of our missionary associate journey, we have so much to be thankful for. Check out our video update to see why!

Alex's Blog | "Fit for the Filippines"

If you know me, I love the arts. The one art that I appreciate other than film and graphic design is the art of food. I love how each culture has their distinct flavors, style and ingredients that are distinct to that culture. I love watching shows like "Chopped" and "Master Chef" and try to use the ingredients I have at home to create artistic dishes. Moving to Asia Pacific gets me salivating  just thinking about the various new foods to try! It is no secret, but food is a large part of Filipino culture. While I am very excited to share some authentic "pancit" and "tocino", I need to back of of some of more unhealthy American cuisine. With Thanksgiving around the corner, now is the time to draw a line in the sand. No, I don't desire to look like Filippino Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao; I just want to be all who God desires me to by taking better care of my body.

That is why I am desiring to re-start a healthier Alex with something I am calling "Fit for the Filippines". As of today, I weigh 215lbs. I would love to 175 lbs before I get on the plane for Asia Pacific. I am pretty horrible at fitness and my p90X fitness program was more like p7X...Manny would not be too impressed.

So friends, I need your help with accountability to be the best physical shape for the missions field. Please feel free to send me ideas, ask how I am doing...and sending a few healthy receipes would be amazing too.

Love you guys!

So far, we have 23 people who have signed up to provide us with prayer support. 19 have signed up to support us relationally. And because of the supporters who have given financially or committed to giving financially, we have 10% of our project budget and 6% of our monthly budget, for 7% of our total budget. If you haven't yet signed up to receive our newsletter, you can sign up here. We'd love for you to pray about supporting us in one or more of these three areas. We'd also love for you to take our ministry information packet to your pastor or missions department. Thanks for sharing in our excitement as we serve Asia Pacific and for supporting us in our journey. We cherish your friendship!

Betsy's Blog | Teach us to number our days

As we proceed on this journey, Psalm 90:12 resonates in my heart. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

We are scheduled to leave in ten months. Three hundred days.

Believe it or not, I've already started thinking about what we'll pack to take with us, what we'll pack and store, what we can sell, what we can give to someone who can use it, etc. I'm trying to burn through the many candles we've received as gifts, that I've found on ridiculous clearance, or that are leftover from our wedding. : ) I'm thinking about what we can live without for a year. And what we can live without for more than a year. And what's really important. And what's not.

My days with this group of seventh grade students are numbered. My days with my team of teachers are numbered. My days in Warehouse Student Ministry are numbered. My days at 2332 Reflections Drive are numbered. For a while at least. I'll quite possibly return to each of these after our year in Asia Pacific, but things will be different then. People will be different.

In my women's Bible study, we're studying James. "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him..."

So God, I lack wisdom. I know my days are few. Teach me to number them correctly that I may gain a heart of wisdom. Help me to make the most of each opportunity in the next three hundred days. Give me your eternal perspective.

Now I know what you are thinking, “Why BetsyandAlex.com; why not AlexandBetsy.com?”.Well, we would have loved to put Alex's name first, but that was not an option... ...unless you wanted to link to realtors in the Twin Cities with great names (but not us).
